A police officer on night duty was tragically killed in an accident at a checkpoint near Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka’s Junction on the Winneba-Kasoa Highway late Friday night, June 21, 2024, around 11 p.m.

The incident involved three vehicles: a Kia truck (registration number GR-6419-N), a trailer (registration number GE-5468-22), and a fuel tanker (registration number GY-2186-13). According to sources, the speeding Kia truck, which was heading toward Mankessim, struck the police officer at the checkpoint in Gomoa Mpota. The truck then collided with a long trailer and a fuel tanker parked along the highway.

An eyewitness report has it that the driver of the Kia truck appeared to be asleep at the wheel, which likely caused the accident. Residents heard the crash and rushed to the scene, discovering the devastating aftermath.

In addition to the fatality, three other individuals were injured and are currently receiving treatment at Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital. The deceased officer’s body has been deposited at the same hospital’s morgue for autopsy and preservation.

The incident has been reported to the police, and an investigation is underway.
