Accra, Ghana – July 14, 2024:
The Ghana Health Service has issued an urgent public alert following the detection of unusual malaria-like illnesses in some districts of the Eastern Region, which have been confirmed as dengue. This announcement was made in a press release dated July 14, 2024.
The National Surveillance System identified these cases, which were not responding to recommended antimalarial treatments and were subsequently managed as acute febrile illnesses. Samples from patients were sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) for testing. Nine of these cases have been confirmed as dengue and are being managed as non-severe cases at home.
In response to this development, a team from the national level, consisting of entomologists and epidemiologists, has joined the regional team to conduct a detailed outbreak investigation.
Dengue, a viral infection spread by mosquitoes, typically presents with symptoms such as high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. While many individuals with dengue do not show symptoms, severe cases can be fatal, requiring hospital care.
Preparedness Measures:
The Ghana Health Service has implemented several preparedness measures and actions:
- A National Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) meeting has been held.
- Alerts have been sent to all regions and districts to enhance surveillance for early detection, sensitize health staff, and raise public awareness.
- Enhanced surveillance has been initiated.
- Public education on signs, symptoms, and prevention of dengue is ongoing.
- Entomological assessments are being undertaken in affected areas.
Treatment:
Treatment for dengue is primarily supportive, including rehydration with fluids, pain relief, rest, and other measures. There is no specific medicine for dengue treatment.
How It Spreads:
Dengue spreads through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito.
Preventive Measures:
To avoid and protect against mosquito bites, especially during the daytime when dengue-transmitting mosquitoes are active, individuals are advised to:
- Wear full-sleeve clothing and long dresses to cover limbs.
The Ghana Health Service urges the public to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of dengue.
