The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North Constituency and former Deputy Minister for Education in charge of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Honourable Gifty Twum-Ampofo, has called on Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to embrace peace ahead of this year’s general elections.
Addressing the Students Representative Council (SRC) week celebration at Ofori Panin Senior High School (OPASS) on July 18, 2024, Hon. Twum-Ampofo highlighted the importance of the event’s theme, “Promoting Peaceful Elections Through Edutainment Among The Youth,” as the nation gears up for the elections.
In her speech at the OPASS Assembly Hall, the legislator urged the youth to leverage their knowledge of Ghana’s electoral processes and their entertainment skills to educate their peers. She emphasized that creative arts can serve as a powerful tool to engrain essential electoral information in people’s minds through entertaining and engaging methods.
Hon. Twum-Ampofo also cautioned against the misuse of social and traditional media platforms to spread misinformation or create unnecessary tensions ahead of the elections. She stressed the importance of responsible communication to prevent any unfortunate incidents related to the electoral process.
Encouraging the youth to be ambassadors of peace, she underscored the necessity for them to promote harmony in their communities, reminding everyone that Ghana is the only home they have. She noted that conflicts often disproportionately affect vulnerable groups, such as women and children.
Furthermore, Hon. Twum-Ampofo called on all political actors to conduct their campaigns without resorting to insults and personal attacks, to preserve the peace and stability that Ghana has enjoyed over its 32 years of democratic governance.
The event at OPASS serves as a reminder of the critical role that education and positive engagement play in ensuring peaceful and fair elections, with youth being at the forefront of these efforts.
