Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has emphasized the importance of adopting a mindset focused on possibilities rather than limitations for the nation’s development. Speaking at a mini rally in Akyem Asafo on August 28, 2024, where he was welcomed alongside the NPP Parliamentary Candidate Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, Dr. Bawumia underscored that Ghana’s progress is contingent on this positive outlook.
He highlighted the achievements of the NPP government over the past eight years, noting that several flagship programs were implemented despite skepticism from the opposition. These programs include Free Senior High School, Free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Planting and Rearing for Food and Jobs, the reintroduction of nurses’ and teacher trainees’ allowances, the medical drone service, and extensive digitalization efforts. Dr. Bawumia pointed out that these initiatives, which were once deemed impossible by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), are now a reality benefiting millions of Ghanaians.
Dr. Bawumia also outlined future policies that the NPP intends to implement if re-elected. These include transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar to cut electricity costs by 50%, using the Ghana Card for passport acquisition, abolishing import duties on mobile phones, extending the validity of driver’s licenses to 10 years, offering free tertiary education for persons with disabilities along with a government employment quota, and launching a national credit system. He proudly announced that Ghana would be the second country in Africa and the first in Sub-Saharan Africa to introduce such a credit system, set to be launched before the December 7th elections.
The Vice President urged the crowd to vote overwhelmingly for the NPP in the upcoming general elections to ensure the continuation of socio-economic development. He cautioned against supporting the opposition NDC and its flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama, suggesting that Mahama’s return would lack accountability since he would not be seeking re-election after another term.
Dr. Bawumia’s message was clear: Ghana’s future hinges on a collective belief in the possible and the need to continue the momentum of development initiated by the NPP.
