The Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly has inaugurated the Third General Assembly comprising sixteen (16) elected members and eight (8) Government Appointees on Monday 12th February, 2022 at the Assembly Hall in Akyem Kukuratumi in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The event which was chaired by Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV, also saw the presence of Honourable Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communications And Digitalization representing the president, Honourable Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga, Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Emil Tawiah Atsu, Municipal Coordinating Director, Departmental Heads,H/W Mrs. Juliet Osei-Duodu, Abuakwa South District Magistrate who sworn-in the Assembly Members, the Clergy, Heads of Security Services,other stakeholders and the press.

Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV, in his opening remarks, congratulated the Assembly Members and urged them to work harder to help develop the Municipality and added that, the traditional authorities doors are widely opened to them to discuss any issues relating to thier mandate.

He added that, decentralization and the local governance system have made them (Assembly Members) agents of development in their communities, unlike the olden days that people look up to Central Government for decision making and development.

Honourable Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga on his part, welcomed all the Assembly Members and explained the structure of local governance and the criteria of nominating Government Appointees which represents 30% of the elected members and must include 30% women participation also, Religious, Traditional and PWDs representations in consultation with the Party Executives, Traditional Heads and other relevant stakeholders.

He admonished all the Assembly Members to cooperate with the Municipal Assembly and the people of their respective Electoral Areas for socio-economic development of the Municipality and the country as a whole.

Honourable Ursula Owusu-Ekuful on behalf of the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, congratulated the Assembly Members and spelt out that, they have the mandate to deliberate, plan, mobilize resources, make decisions including bylaws to ensure the transformation of the Municipality.

She continued that, the occasion marks another important milestone of deepening decentralization as stipulated in article 35 of the 1992 Constitution which enjoins the stage to promote decentralization and popular participation in governance by affording all possible opportunities to the citizenry to participate in decision making at all levels of government.

According to her, the president is optimistic that, new ideas will emanate from them (Assembly Members) to ensure economic growth and development of the country.

Honourable Ursula Owusu-Ekuful further assured all gathered of Government’s continuous commitment in ensuring socio-economic development of the country and called all to rally behind Government.

ELECTION OF PRESIDING MEMBER.

The election of the Presiding Member’s position of the Third General Assembly has been rescheduled to the 22nd February, 2024 following the inability of the two aspirants Honourable Elvis Yeboah and Honourable Agyei Boateng attaining two-thirds majority of the voters after two rounds of polls.

In the first round, Honourable Elvis Yeboah had 14 out of 25 votes with 1 rejected as against 10 votes for Honourable Agyei Boateng.

At the end of the second round of voting, Honourable Elvis Yeboah had 13 votes as against 9 for Honourable Agyei Boateng with 3 rejected votes.
