On July 19, 2024, the Honourable Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga, Municipal Assembly of Abuakwa North, officially handed over an ultramodern market to the Old Tafo Akim Community in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
The new market, comprising forty-one open sheds, three lockable stores, and a warehouse, was presented to Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV, the Akyem Tafohene. This modern facility is set to transform the economic landscape of the community by providing a dedicated space for local traders.
During the handover ceremony, Hon. Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga emphasized the importance of maintaining the market and cautioned against the resale of the sheds to other traders. He stressed that the new market would significantly enhance the community’s economic activities.
In his acceptance speech, Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV expressed gratitude to the Municipal Assembly for addressing the community’s needs and completing the market project during Hon. Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga’s tenure. He acknowledged that the project was initiated under the late MCE Hon. Owusu Twum Ampofo, who had prioritized it due to personal ties—his late mother was the market queen. Although the project faced delays after Hon. Ampofo’s passing, it was successfully completed thanks to Hon. Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga’s efforts.
Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV also urged roadside traders to relocate to the new market, warning that failure to comply would result in necessary sanctions.
In addition to the market handover, Hon. Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga donated ten packets of roofing sheets and boxes of roofing nails to Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV. These materials are intended for re-roofing the R/C and Zion Basic School blocks, which were damaged during a heavy rainstorm in February 2024.
This new market facility is poised to become a central hub for commerce in Old Tafo Akim, fostering growth and development in the community.
