Honourable Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Suhum Constituency, has announced his decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections. This declaration comes after he lost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary on January 17, 2024, to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, also known as Protozoa.
During a press conference, Hon. Asante explained that his decision was influenced by overwhelming calls from his constituents. According to him, many Suhum residents have continuously contacted him through phone calls, visits to his home, and even at the Parliament House, urging him to contest as an independent candidate. He stated that his supporters believe the NPP delegates were unfair to him during the primaries, leading to public demonstrations on July 28, 2024, demanding his candidacy.
After conducting personal research and consulting with his team, Asante believes he has a strong chance of winning the Suhum seat as an independent candidate. He emphasized that his work in the constituency remains unfinished, and he is committed to fulfilling the mandate given to him by the people.
When asked by journalists if his decision to run as an independent candidate would be seen as defying the NPP’s choice, Asante responded that his actions were in service to the broader community, not just a small group. He highlighted the turnout at a recent health walk organized by his supporters as evidence of the strong backing he has within the constituency.
Asante outlined his achievements as the MP for Suhum, including the development of road infrastructure, the modernization of the Suhum football pitch, providing commercial vehicles to local groups, supporting market women financially, and improving security in the municipality. He also highlighted his contributions to health services, education, agriculture, and environmental sanitation, asserting that these efforts demonstrate his capacity to deliver for the people.
“I have won elections in this constituency before, and I have what it takes to win again this year. I am grateful for the love and support of my constituents, and I am committed to serving them,” Asante concluded.
This move sets the stage for a competitive race in Suhum, as Asante aims to challenge both the NPP’s official candidate and other contenders in the December 7, 2024, general elections.
